Cities in Broward County Florida

Broward County, named in honor of Napoleon Bonparte Broward, former Governor of Florida, was not formed until 1915, derived from parts of both Palm Beach County and Dade County. It was once said that this land was "unfit for human habitation", but now, not even one hundred years later, it is the home to over a million people! Florida was owned by Spain until 1821, when The United States obtained the territory. It was in 1825 that Colonel James Gadsden surveyed the area that is now known as Broward County. Seminole Indians began inhabiting the area during the 1st Seminole War as they were being pushed out of the northern parts of Florida by settlers that wanted their rich pastures. After the demands that the Seminoles be moved to Oklahoma, they killed Major Francis L. Dade and his officers kicking off the 2nd Seminole War. Major William Lauderdale constructed two forts; one on the New River and one on the beach, both were named in Lauderdales honor. After the war ended in 1842, there was barely enough settlers to consider the area an actual settlement. This area was barely accessible in the late 1800's until Henry Flagler received word that Miami was not affected by the great freeze of 1895, and decided to extend the Florida East Coast Railroad in the area. Once the railroad was brought through the area, the Everglades drainage project began only 10 years later and Port Everglades opened in the early 1900's. Flagler knew that in order to make any of the money back from extending the railroad he would have to find potential land buyers in the area, therefore, he put his land companies to work developing the area. And boy, did it develop...
