    Cities in Calhoun County Florida

Calhoun County, Florida, was named in honor of the South Carolina United States Senator, John C. Calhoun. In 1838 the county was created for the sole purpose of establishing St. Joseph into a competitive city with Apalachicola. St. Joseph was a city that served as the Calhoun County Seat for a short time until yellow fever and multiple hurricanes destroyed the city. St. Joseph also served as the seaport for the county once the railroad was constructed from St. Joseph to Lola, a city located on the western bank of the Apalachicola River. After the destruction of the city of St. Joseph, Abes Springs Bluff took over the role of the county seat until 1880, thus began the construction of the town of Blountstown! The town was plotted around the two story frame courthouse that lay adjacent to the Apalachicola River. It was during the late 1800's that farmers from North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Alabama found that the river valley alongside of the Apalachicola River provide perfect growing conditions for cotton and Indian corn. These conditions brought many settlers to the area with dreams of planting crops, which led to Calhoun County to become a lucrative farming community.

Today Calhoun County has become known as home to many cities such as Altha, Blountstown, Broad Branch, Chason, Chipola, Clarksville, Cox, Fisher Corner, Frink, Henderson Mill, Kinard, New Hope, Ocheesee, Rollins Corner, Scotts Ferry, Selman, Sharpstown and Willis. The County Seat, Blountstown has been named a Main Street Community, which is to say that this close knit community is striving to preserve the history that surrounds this unique community. The Apalachicola River, once a transportation river way for cotton and other goods, now serves as a water recreation haven. Boating, fishing, swimming and paddling is a just a way of life for those in Calhoun County!
