Cities in Dixie County Florida

Dixie County, Florida was created in 1912, melded from a southern portion of Lafayette County. The legends of how Dixie County became what it is today all started with a gentleman by the name of George Miller. Miller came to the area in the 1820's from North Carolina and befriended the sons of Indian Chief Tigertail. Chief Tigertail agreed to grant Miller a parcel of land for settlement and sent Miller and his sons, Bowlegs and Suwannee, out to see the land that was chosen for him. While on their journey, they came to the Steinhatchee River, where Suwannee informed Miller to climb the tallest hickory tree and look in all directions, north, south, east and west, and find a tree in each one of these directions. Once Miller located the area in which Suwannee was speaking of, he was told that all of the land within the range of the four trees was all his! Soon all the land was cleared and used for raising hogs and cattle and planting peanuts and corn, up until Miller became ill with malaria, 10 years later. Cheif Tigertail sent word to Miller's father of his sons’ illness and his father arrived three days before his sons' passing. Cheif Tigertail offered the land that belonged to George Miller to his father if he would stay with the Indians, Mr. Miller refused the offer and attempted to bring his sons body home for burial. Tigertail would not allow Millers body to be moved, therefore the father returned home, without his son, and purchased a marble monument and iron fence as a memorial for his son; the Memorial still stands today on the land owned by McQueen Chaires in Old Town.

Today Dixie County is home to cities such as Cross City, Horseshoe Beach and Old Town. Located between the Steinhatchee River to the west and the Suwannee River to the East, water recreation is abounding in Dixie County. Fishing, both saltwater and freshwater, boating, hiking, paddling, "spring hopping", hunting and SCUBA diving are a part of everyday life here in Dixie. Bigmouth Bass, Catfish and Red Belly are among the many fish that are found in the freshwater Suwannee River, however, If you're looking for some saltwater fishing spots, off the coast line between Cedar Key and the Steinhatchee River, Sea trout, Redfish, Cobia, Grouper and Mackerel are in abundance. Cave diving in one of the many springs in Dixie County provide opportunities to explore the world under Florida. The 72 degree year round temperature of the springs are also available to cool yourself off on those hot summer days, as Guaranto Springs, Fanning springs and Manatee Springs is only a hop, skip and jump away! Red Belly Day, named in honor of the freshwater fish of the Suwannee, is a whole day to celebrate the springs on the riverside of the Suwannee River at the Fanning Springs State Recreational facility. Sponsored by the Dixie County Chamber of Commerce, Red Belly Day provides live entertainment, food and a full day of good ol' family fun.

Real estate options in Dixie County include single family homes, riverfront property, land lots and gated communities. Dixie County is a reminder of what Florida "used" to be; sparse population, low crime rate, great schools and opportunities for great family fun around every corner. Many relocate to the area to 'get away from it all' and many come for just a vacation, but be aware if you're here on vacation; those who visit very seldom leave!
