Escambia County Florida, created in 1821, named in honor of the Escambia River, Spanish for "barter" or "exchange", lies on the western most tip of Florida. The county seat of this incredible county is Pensacola, nicknamed "The City of Five Flags" for the five governments that have flown their flags over the city throughout history; France, Great Britain, Spain, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America. The City of Pensacola was the first European settlement in the continental United States, in February of 2009, the King and Queen of Spain took part of the commemorations of Pensacola's 450th anniversary! It wasn't until 1821, while Andrew Jackson was the governor, that Pensacola became part of the United States. Escambia County has been a victim of many hurricanes since 1975, starting with Eloise, Frederic in 1979, Erin in 1995, Opal in 1995, Georges in 1998, Ivan in 2004 and Dennis in 2005, all of which led to the re-construction of Pensacola time and time again. Through all the trials and tribulations, Escambia County has survived the rich and colorful history and still remains as one of the most incredible counties in all of Florida.
