Gadsden FL Homes for Sale Gadsden County Florida Real Estate Cities in Gadsden County Florida
Gadsden County named in honor of James Gadsden, senior military officer to Andrew Jackson, was created in 1823 as the 5th county in Florida, known as 'Middle Florida'. The boundary lines for Gadsden County were the Suwannee River on the east, the Apalachicola River to the west, Georgia border to the north and Lake Talquin on the southeast. The county seat of Quincy plays an important role in Gadsden’s history for its shade tobacco industry. Shade tobacco was grown for the use of wrapping cigars, only two places in the U.S. provided suitable conditions for crop growing at the time and Gadsden County was one of them! During the turn of the century the tobacco industry was a major economic factor in Gadsden County, until the Coca-Cola bottling company opened its doors and while the bottling company had value, the real source of the income came from the purchase of stock in the company. According to one estimate that was made; Gadsden County had more "coca-cola millionaires" than the rest of the country! Today Gadsden County is home to cities such as Chattahoochee, Greensboro, Gretna, Havana, Midway, Mount Pleasant and Quincy. Being a small county; only 508 sq miles, Gadsden County has been able to preserve the nature of Old Florida. Located in the northwestern part of Florida and surrounded by lakes and rivers, water recreation is abounding throughout the county. Lake Talquin State Forest provides residents and vacationers alike, with ample opportunities to explore nature with guided and unguided tours, educational demonstrations and open outdoor recreation such as hiking, camping, horseback riding and birding. If golfing is more your style, the Golf Club of Quincy provides 18 holes of golfing to challenge even the most agile golfer! Relocating to Gadsden County, with its rolling hills, unique history, interesting culture and charming Victorian homes is like taking a step back into time and seeing Florida as it was meant to be. Plenty of festivals and outdoor activities make raising a family in this charming community a literal "walk in the park". |
