Jackson FL Homes for Sale Jackson County Florida Real Estate Cities in Jackson County Florida
Jackson County, named in honor Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States of America was established in 1822, carved from a portion of Escambia County. Originally the county spanned from the Choctawhatchee River to the Suwannee River, however after many changes and the creation of many different counties, Jackson County is the only county in Florida to boarder along two different states, Alabama and Georgia. The first town in Jackson was Webbville, established in 1827, before that time no towns existed within the county lines. County meetings were held at such places as "Robinson's Big Springs or the "Big Spring of the Choctawahatchee". The original county seat was Webbville, the first town in the county, founded by Robert Beveridge in 1827. Webbville was a thriving town for nearly a year, when the settlers in Marianna confronted the Florida Legislature with promises of free land, a new courthouse and a public square if the legislature moved the county seat to Marianna. The county seat was then moved to Marianna and as the county government moved into the new courthouse in 1829, Webbvilles residents moved with it and Webbville became nothing but a memory. Today Jackson is home to cities such as Alford, Bascom, Campbelltown, Cottondale, Graceville, Grand Ridge, Greenwood, Jacob City, Malone, Marianna and Sneads. One of the few 'Wonders of Florida' is located in Marianna; Florida Caverns State Park is the only Florida State Park that offers cave tours to the public. Although, the caverns is loaded with all the wonders that an air filled cave has to offer, the park offers 38 campsites, swimming, paddling in the Chipola River and a 9-hole golf course! Merritt's Millpond is a nationally recognized red ear sunfish haven! Fed by Blue Springs, a popular cave divers paradise, this 202-acre millpond is a magnet for fisherman, swimmers, boaters and residents that are drawn to water recreation. Relocating to Jackson County offers all the ol' Florida charm of the quaint little town of Bascom, only 4.8 square miles in area, to the slightly larger county seat, Marianna. A drive through Jackson County is like taking a step back in time, with rural country sides, ice cream cottages, oak-lined streets, drive-in movie theatres and the old peanut mill of Graceville! In the words of Jackson County it's "one of Florida's best kept secrets." |
