Lafayette County, named in honor of Marquis de Lafayette, was established in 1834 from a portion of Madison County. The entire eastern border of the county is formed by the Suwannee River. The original county seat of the county, New Troy, was once a thriving community full of settlers, a cotton gin, general stores, boarding houses, churches and a post office. One fateful New Years Eve the court house was burned to the ground, the origins of the fire were never determined although some believe that it was a drunken prank. In the aftermath of the Courthouse fire the county seat was moved to the city of Mayo, leaving New Troy as nothing but a ghost town. Today Lafayette County is the home to both the cities of Day and Mayo. The county is known as a prohibition county, which is to say that there are no alcoholic beverages to be found in the county. Located along the Suwannee River and speckled with natural springs, Lafayette County is a Mecca for cave divers and water recreation enthusiasts.
