Cities in Lake County Florida

With a history that dates back to 1562 with the arrival of a French Huguenot colony, Lake County, Florida presents itself with a rich history. The Huguenots were a group of French Protestants that were members of the Reformed Church that was established in 1550 by a John Calvin. This particular colony established itself at Astor, Florida alongside of the St. Johns River. In 1566 this colony met its demise at the hands of the Spanish explorers. The Spanish had one goal in mind at this time; converting the Indians to what they believed to be the one true religion; Catholicism. If the conversion was one that was not successful, the village was massacred. Those that did not die due to a resisted conversion were killed due to the spread of diseases. In 1763 James Spalding opened a trading post in Astor, Florida and gave it the name of Spalding's Upper Store. It was this trading post that prompted the long stay in the area of botanist, John Bartram and his son. Twenty years later, Spain began to occupy Florida once more, this time giving away large land parcels in return for favors. Moses Levy was the proud reciprocate of one such land parcel in 1819. Levy, father of David Yulee Levy, Florida's first senator, constructed an establishment alongside of the St. Johns River to serve as a settlement for the European Jewish community. At the end of both the Seminole Indian Wars and the Civil War the government provided two separate acts; The Armed Occupation Act and the Homesteading Act. Both of these Acts provided 160 acres of land to any male that would live on the land for a significant amount of time and improve it. These Acts came at a time when men were anxious to get on with their lives and in search of ways to have a new start; therefore, many men took up residence in Lake County (which was called Mosquito County up until 1887). The county received its name in reference to the 1400+ lakes that reside within the county lines. After three elections (and a whole lot of corruption) Taveres, Florida became the seat of Lake County.
