Leon County, named in honor of Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer, was established in 1824 originally from a portion of Escambia County and then later from Gadsden County. The county seat of Leon County, Tallahassee, also doubles as the Florida State Capitol. Tallahassee became the state's capitol during the time that the State of Florida ceded from Spain to the U.S. At this time the largest cities in Florida were Pensacola and St. Augustine and as it was impractical to hold state business alternately in two different locations, a central meeting place was established, Tallahassee. It took nearly 200 years for the small village of Tallahassee to grow into the 98.2 square miles of city that it is today. There is only one other city in Leon County in addition to Tallahassee and that city is named Woodville.

Within Leon County is the Apalachicola National Forest, 500,000 acres of pristine woodlands, rivers and springs make up this protected forest. The Apalachicola Forest provides ample opportunities for fishing, paddling, boating, swimming, camping and nature gazing for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. As Tallahassee is one of the largest cities within the state, finding something to do is never a hassle. Museums, theaters, shopping, restaurants and concerts make up a majority of the entertainment. The Florida State University (FSU) is located within the area, placing college spirit right in the back yard of our residents.
