Cities in Putnam County Florida

In 1849 Putnam County was created from portions of Alachua, Baker, Clay, Marion, Orange and St. Johns counties. Named in honor of Major Benjamin Alexander Putnam, St. Augustine attorney and Officer in the First Seminole War, Putnam County has been famous for it's incredible fishing for many years. Lying along nearly 100 miles of the St. Johns River as well as containing two of the largest lakes in Florida, Lake George and Crescent Lake, Putnam County was given the claim as the "Bass Capital of the World". The county seat, Palatka, recieved it's name from an old Indian word "Pilatka", which means "Crossing Over". The Palatka area was once run by two tribes of the Timucuan Indians run by Chief Saturiwa and Chief Utina. After the inevitable demise of the Timucuan Indians through disease and war, the Seminole Indians took over the area and dubbed the area Palatka.

Today Putnam County is home to cities like Crescent City, Interlachen, Palatka, Pomona Park and Welaka. Among the many things to do in Putnam County, Ravine Gardens State Park is a "must do". A ravine created from water flowing from the St. Johns River for thousands of years was transformed into an incredible garden in 1933. Ravine Gardens State Park, located in Palatka, consists of miles of trail system enabling motorists and bicycles alike, unobstructed views of the magnificent gardens.
